I fell in love with SOUL Music when I heard my sister playing Motown back in the 60s; from then on I was hooked.
I was only around 11 at the time, but would always try to sneak into her room and take 2 or 3 records and play them on my parent’s fairly new stereogram. I became obsessed with doing this and even kept a diary of what nights she would go out, I hardly ever returned them to her, and started to stockpile them in my room – I don’t think she really noticed too much, and if she did, she never asked where they were – I still have them today…
In later years, my love for this music never stopped, as a teenager, I used to go to Contempo records in London and buy loads of Imports, (the ones without the centres) I remember you could buy 20 records for around £5.00 they all had the small hole drilled through them, I brought about 30 pounds worth on one trip and started logging them intensively. Eventually I was asked to D.J at a local club, and got the chance to play some of them, I play all kinds of Soul Music, but, to be honest my main love has got to be the early days of Soul, the original labels like Gordy, Invictus, Stax, Atlantic , then into the 70s with the Philly sound and the introduction of the “disco & Jazz funk” scene”.
I used to go clubbing (and D.J) virtually every spare evening I had, and took to following all different aspects of Soul music, hunting out different clubs in the south of England, I am also an avid Caister soul weekender regular which is mainly a Southern soul event, but, also follow the Northern scene quite regularly as well. Before Jersey, I did 3 years on P&O cruise ships, eventually getting a D.J spot which enabled me to see the world and doing what I enjoyed in the evenings, Playing a wide varied selection of music to an even varied selected crowd,
I moved to Jersey Channel islands, in 1979 and D.J’d at various venues across the Island, and have for the last 7 years run Jersey’s Premier Northern Soul/Motown night every Saturday night at The Soleil pub, called “Soul at the Soleil” - pop in and say hello if your ever over here on holiday. I also run various soul events through the island, and compile the Soleil Soul Cllub Newsletter with a mailing list of over 300 people worldwide.
